SIAM, I am.

SIAM, I am.

As a society, Argentines love to have love affairs with everything from their television stars to the hottest new trends whether it be cell phones and ultra new gadget technology, clothing, food, hair styles or their cars. And they’re really good at keeping up with the latest and greatest trends and their consumption habits are amazing – really. But they’ve had a lot of practice. In 1911, Argentine businessman Torcuato di Tella decided to start the industrial machine company Siam di Tella.

By the 1960s, the business was a great success. Many typical Argentine households had (and some still have these beautiful antique) SIAM brand name appliances – from refrigerators and blenders to automobiles. Did I say “automobiles”? Oh yes. One of the most popular Argentine autos in the 1960s (in fact a choice machine for the taxistas of Buenos Aires) was the SIAM Tella 1500.

Although the company has long stopped making these automobiles, it’s very likely that when an Argentine sees one in the street nowadays – they stop to admire the beauty, the lines and details that to some older generations bring a nostalgia of a different Argentina.
