Going to Hollywood
Now you know that Buenos Aires is full of fantastic restaurants and lively nightclubs! In fact one particular area in town (that strip in the area of Palermo Hollywood – right along Humbolt and Fitz Roy streets between Niceto Vega and Paraguay) is known to be both a dining destination AND a great area to toss back a few cold ones in one of the trendy neighborhood digs.
DINING
If you’re going to start off your night in super style, try walking over to Osaka – a Japanese-Peruvian fusion
restaurant with a gust list of some of Buenos Aires most important VIPs. Lucky for my friend Anna and I, when we went there we ran into some of the regulars (Marie and Don) who graciously introduced us to their waiter Jose. We didn’t even have to look at the menu – our dishes kept coming until we said “Stop! Stop!”. I don’t know if my favorite dish was the salmon sashimi with passion fruit sauce or variations on a ceviche that were presented in such a style that I left wondering if our chef was actually an artist. The food = 10 points. Excellent. The waiters = kind of pushing food at you and wanting you to order order order – I think they might work on commission. Clientele = kind of snobby. I saw an older gentleman walk in with a prostitute in hot pants (like Daisy Duke style..) and there were a lot of older women with a ton of plastic surgery as well. If you can ignore them, the place is fantastic. They’re open for lunch as well, but rumor has it that the chefs who work at lunch just aren’t as good as the ones who work at night. Bring a lot of money with you as they don’t accept all forms of payment. Osaka Restaurant. Soler 5608, 4775-6964.
If you’re looking to save up your money on food so that you can spend it on drinks afterwards, check out one of my favorite local Chinese Restaurants. There is absolutely no big show here as it’s mostly a local place, but the owner is a chef from Peking who has lived here for the past eight years running his business – Yan kie Restaurant. With a nice selection from curries to the really affordable eggrolls and soups, the proportions are all pretty generous and tasty as well! You can ask for your Hot n Spicy soup to be really really spicy and the taste is just the way it should be in my opinion. Yank kie Restaurant & Delivery. Paraguay 5110, 4777-0962.
DRINKS
Unico and Sonomon are standard bars that cater to young, hip crowds. Unico is one of those great places to catch up with friends and check out the sheeky crowd but if you’re looking to surround yourself with a little more rock and roll, check out
Sonomon with its dimly lit interior. By the way, its a real pick up joint. The music is great and the crowd in the back terrace is pretty fun (especially if the power gets cut off – ahem). If you go with smiley, chatty, giggly girlfriends (like I did when my friend Anna was here), expect to get hit on – a LOT.
Come to think of it – at either bar you’ll get hit on a lot, but let’s just say at Unico, you’ll get hit on by pilots or professors and Sonomon, you’ll get hit on by students or drug dealers.
Unico is located at Honduras 5604
Sonomon is located at Fitz Roy 1655
