This year’s celebration offers traditional American fare: hamburgers, hot dogs, and cold Budweiser; a sharp contrast to the usual Argentine pizza and Quilmes beer. And what is a 4th of July celebration without fireworks? Sparklers and American flags will be supplied to the attendees. With the combination of good ole’ American food and fireworks, one can’t help but feel right at home.

Today when I woke up it was three degrees (Celsius, in Fahrenheit that would be about 37 degrees) – so we’re into winter and all of Argentina is getting colder in these months. Even though the cold here doesn’t even compare to my hometown Chicago’s blistery weather, it still wreaks havoc on my skin. There are tons of products available to care for your skin, but a lot tend to be over-perfumed, overpriced, over-packaged and sometimes even require you to purchase 3-4 other supplementary products (that’s unethical marketing!). So today I’m going to break this down and give you a few economical suggestions to maintain your beautiful skin in cold weather – the sustainable way.
Last week, I found my way to Standard Restaurant in Palermo Hollywood -a cleverly designed cozy corner restaurant with beautiful lighting that really added to the modern ambiance. The tall walls were covered in wood to their height of approximately four meters high and the warmth radiated with the correct usage of lighting and mirrors that sufficiently opened the space and reflected the tree lined street just outside. Although the female servers’ uniforms were slightly reminiscent of Amish frocks, they seemed to move about the table well – doing their jobs pleasantly and efficiently. So there’s the setting – are you there? Let me tell you a little bit about the food now.
Stephane Ducret will be exposing his work at ArteBa this year. This Swiss modern artist will be showing his work with two galleries: Galerias del Paseo (Manantiales/Punta del Este y Montevideo) and Angel Guido Art Project between May 29 and June 2.
He’s a must see for those who love modern art and recently a topic in Vogue Magazine for his trendy interior designs.
Girardo Sirolli will be presenting his work at the Galeria Forma on Thames 1620 starting this Saturday evening. There will be a special inauguration with drinks at 19:00 on May 31st and the art will be shown until June 12.
Although Buenos Aires is located quite near the coast, it’s surprisingly difficult to find fresh fish in this city. Argentina is a country known for its meat, so what do you do if you’re in the city and craving your favorite nigiri, sashimi or maki rolls? Fortunately, there are a few places that you can go for Japanese food where the food is fresh, the ambiance is good and you can leave feeling like a sumo wrestler without breaking the bank.

One of the most modern and free forms of art that many societies share is graffiti. I used to love being stuck at train crossings in Chicago because inevitably, you would see some wonderful messages or pictures – sometimes really amazing “traveling galleries” passing in front of you while you sat on your bike or in your car. Even walking down the streets, there would be wonderful murals on the walls – paintings of influential individuals or whatever expression that the artist felt was important to share with the world at the time. And the artist does put the time and effort into the work, knowing full well that it lasts only for a limited amount of time.

I had completely written off last Sunday as a recovery day, having gotten in at 6:30 AM from a very entertaining Saturday night. Luckily, I have some good friends here that were not content with letting me lay on the couch all day in a position that would be considered much more embryonic than fetal. So when the phone rang at about 1:00PM, I was thinking about answering it with some choice words about parentage, followed by a scolding about how no one is awake at 1:00 PM on Sunday in Buenos Aires. Instead, I accepted the invite from Gina and Javier to what became one of the most special days I’ve spent here.
